Mommies and entrepreneurs: Be warned!

I know that a lot of mommies read this blog. And I know that some of you marvelous women own businesses, too (you are all beyond amazing!). That's why I need to warn you about something.

A lot of parents and businesspeople are eager to have their babies/business featured in magazines (especially Summit Media mags!). Please be warned that there are certain unscrupulous people out there who will prey on your enthusiasm. If someone approaches you and says that they will feature your products in a magazine like Smart Parenting or Good Housekeeping, please ask for identification! They will usually say any of the following: "Hi! We want to feature your product in our magazine...
  • "Please send us free samples."
  • "Send us gift certificates as a token for the editor-in-chief."
  • "I'd like to discuss this with you more but I ran out of load. Please send me load right now. I'll pay you back when you come by our office."
And it's not paranoia to then go one step further and call the editorial office/email the editor and ask if this certain someone is affiliated with the title (our trunk line is 451-8888). Especially when that certain someone says your child is the cutest thing on earth and can she model for magazines like Total Girl or Disney Princess or Candy and if it's okay to just drop off your kid at the shoot location.

Parents and entrepreneurs, be extra careful! Be extra wise!

  1. there are people who actually do this?! good thing i haven't experienced this, but thanks for sharing!

  2. Excellent warning - there are so many sophisticated scams out there you really can't be too paranoid...

This is all pretty new to me so please feel free to share your mommy wisdom!
