Vito's birthday

Hello everyone! This is Vince. I'll be taking over blogging duties while Topaz Mommy is busy with the newborn baby. Thought I'd just briefly update the world on the birth of our son Vito with some photos of the big event.

Labor officially began with this picture taken on August 12. Bizarrely enough, I was the one in labor due to diarrhea (too much information, sorry). Frances didn't feel a thing, except some discomfort. Turns out she was already in early labor. We landed in the hospital because of bright red bleeding, which can be dangerous. This is us in the St. Luke's High Risk Pregnancy Care Unit after being told that Frances and the baby were ok.

I like this place. They have La-Z-Boy Chairs! Too bad they told us to go home after dinner. I could have totally slept in that chair. After a bunch of exams, doctors decided that we weren't in any risk and delivery was still a day or more away. So from possible emergency CS, we were right where we began. Grrr.

And we're back. Frances woke me up at 4am August 13, to tell me that contractions were 5 minutes apart, so we rushed back to St. Luke's, looking far less ready than we did yesterday. This picture is us at 5am the next morning. F was already 7cms dilated. Not in picture: bloody mess below the waist.

742am. The baby's out! And he's huge!

I take full credit for those hands and long fingers.

Did this big guy really come out of my wife?

Good job, Frances! She pushed the baby out in five epic pushes.

Pit stop at the pedia's station. Baby weighed 3620 gms or 7 lbs and 15 oz, 1 oz shy of 8 lbs.

And now he's official. I take full credit for his feet too.

Papa and the baby rabbit in the delivery room.

Vito Simon Amper Sales, getting some rest in the recovery room. We wanted an old world name, like the names of our grandparents (Primo and Vita, Vicente and Concepcion, Julian and Aurelia, Wenceslao and Olympia), and we latched on to the name Vito. We just liked the sound of it and how no one is named Vito anymore. Vito means life.

In the rec room again. Our first family portrait.

Vito sleeping in Room 817 as Mama Frances looks on. His second name, Simon, started out as an inside joke. Simon Sales--using the Filipino pronunciation as in Jose Rizal's Simoun in El Fili--sounds like Si Mon Sales, who's my dad of course. It kind of stuck.

My brother Phil, his wife Reza, and their kids Kevin and Sean. The two kids showed their toys to Vito. Cuteness.

Lolo Jules and cousins Rachel and Nicole. Frances' dad came all the way from the farm in Leyte for the big event.

Here's looking at you, kid.

Bored yet? I have a bajillion more photos to show.

Enough with the pictures, Mama! Give me milk!

Doing tai-chi.

The next day. Vito getting down to his birthday suit for his first bath.

He didn't like his first bath at all! According to astrology hokum, he's a Leo. His Chinese astrology symbol is Tiger. So he's doubly a cat. I take full blame for Vito's aversion to water as I am hydrophobic. One day he will overcome it like I did, but it won't be easy, kiddo!

There there. That wasn't so bad!

Cousin Elizabeth says hi.

Lola Digna and Cousin Elizabeth again. Vito was under strict orders from Lola D not to come out on the 12th because (1) she didn't want them to share a birthday--he should have his own day!--and (2) Lolo and Lola were in Singapore on the 12th. He waited as long as he could and came out on the 13th.

Auntie Anj and Cousin Zo, looking at the freshly-circumcised Vito. Zo bugged his parents to come to the hospital because he wanted to see his new cuz.

Sleepy time

Burpy time

Cuddling with Papa in the morning. We're almost ready to go!

At home in his crib. Phew!

Thanks to everyone who visited us. We weren't able to post photos of you all. Muchas gracias to all the well-wishers and everyone who gave those lovely gifts. We love you all! Hugs and kisses!

  11. Hi Vince and Frances! Congratulations on the birth of Vito. We're alike in our choice of name-- my hubby and I wanted a classic, manly, strong-sounding name, we called our son Vito Sebastian (using the Filipino-Spanish intonation). Wala lang, fact lang!

Vito (yours) is such a sweet, pudgy little cutie. Don't you love his teeny baby smell? It's the best thing in the world.

If you need any tips or any help, do just drop me a line (though we've never met). Cherish these early days; how fast they go by!
